Before I start I want to give a shout out to Glowforge for starting the #save2millionears initiative. At a time of despair they have ignited a feeling of purpose again. I thank you.
I would also like to recognize our Humble Acres App Community. They have played a crucial role in helping us meet supply demands by donating materials to fill request. Cody and I couldn't be more proud to host such a wonderful community.
So this is it. While I've known my entire life that being a self proclaimed "Artist" would be the first industry to fall in an economic crisis. I never considered it might actually happen. The phrase " Pray for the best, Prepare for the worst" has never felt so literal in my life.
It was by chance I glanced at our sales compared to one year ago. At the height of the "global pandemic" our sales had dropped over 90% . It was a shot to the gut and a realization we needed to do something drastic.
What did I do? I made a tablet stand for our daughters' tablets. When I logged in to our Glowforge platform I saw an urgent notice from Glowforge. At first I brushed it off. I didn't want to think of all the people in need when my business was likely going under and still just might if our economy doesn't open soon. It had sparked my curiosity, however. The next day I went back to see what it was.
What I found was a free template and a request for makers to donate to hospitals and first responders. Through the clouds of my self pity I looked to see if we had any supplies laying around. To my surprise I found a stash of acrylic and leather I had forgotten about and shared with our App community what I was up to.
I think that is when I realized I'm happiest when I can help people. As much as I love creating and making art I need to have purpose with it. No amount of money in the world can match the satisfaction of providing something, no matter how small, to someone in need.
So we will make ear savers. We will focus on supporting our community.
This is the start of our overhaul in a new direction.
